The Kansas City Krunch of the National Women’s Football League held its third tryout on Saturday, with its first season about six months away. Owner / general manager Cheryl Fields resigned from her position with the Kansas Human Rights Commission to work full time on building the football team.

The 2-year-old NWFL is expected to have at least 30 teams next season, which runs from April-July. Fields said the Krunch will play eight to 10 games, likely on Sunday evenings. It will practice at least three times a week.

Fields still is searching for a stadium and coaching staff. She plans on a roster of around 55 players, who won’t be paid enough for football to be their full-time job. The league uses NFL rules.

Fields estimates the Krunch will need 3,000 fans per game to survive. She felt it was worth the gamble.

“I’ve always been a football fan,” she said. “It wasn’t until ladies’ basketball came about that I said, ‘Hmmm…’”

Speaking of the NWFL, the founder of the league refused to switch the league’s name Thursday at the NFL’s request. But Catherine Masters agreed to change the title-game name and two teams’ logos. The title game was previously called the SupHer Bowl.
