Coaches Corner

“This was a very important win for the us for numerous reasons; our last game of 2003 was a lost the start of 2004 was a win; we were able to execute our plays with an understanding of “why” and “will” – “why should I do this” and “I have the will to do it”; our individual tackling was better than our pre-season games but we’ll have to definitely improve team tackling as we get to the more physical runners; blocking was maintain on the L.O.S and then taken to the second tier but we will have to be more aggressive once we get to that second tier; The most important was our Special Teams, particularly our P.A.T.; We did not make one extra point last season, which one could easy say, is why we missed the play-offs by one point. Now I know that one extra point is not the point we needed to make the play-offs but it surely would have put us in a better position to advance into the post season with one more win. We attempted 10 extra points and made 5; that is a tremendous turn-a-round for this team having only attempted one last season and no Field Goals. The confidence we created this past week is needed going into the next few games but most importantly the fact that we even attempted is an enormous uplift of that confidence”.

Now we are aware of the things we need to work on and we will do what we have too to get ready for the rest of this season. We will have to minimize penalties offensively in order are to increase our chances for the post-season; but scoring like we did and doing so in the red-zone will be the tell-tell of our success and how far we can go. Scoring 6 of 9 times within the 25 is something that makes me very happy!

We have decrease penalties on defense as well and continue to cause turnovers; now we had 3 picks and 3 or 4 fumble recoveries which is an awesome Defensive Performance but I am greedy I want more or at least the same, nothing less – As my Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator said speaking about the Defense “They may not know it but they just raised their BAR”!

Having a victory of 59 – 0 would cause some to say “you didn’t have any competition, and they are correct in a way but on the other hand; we went there to play because we were prepared and I will never assume that an opponent is not prepared. “Anyone who wants to play this game must come prepared because we are going to play as if our lives depend on the Victory”! As I told my players weeks before the game; “as far as I am concern the Denton Stempede is an Un-Defeated team and they won the Championship Game last season”. That is the approach I am taking throughout this season regardless of which team we play and regardless of how much experience they have. “Don’t come to just be there, you better come to work”!

Next Game against St. Louis – All I have to say is “PAYBACK” not revenge just “PAYBACK”
